Beware the Amygdala Hijack: Developing your Emotional Intelligence [Video]

Preview

Please join me in the MAP Community in April for a three-week lab on Leadership and Emotional Intelligence.

After over 20 years of working in art museum education, I am shifting my attention to coaching and leadership development. Exploring emotional intelligence is a key component to this new direction. Being emotionally aware of ourselves and those around us is one of the most powerful tools in building and maintaining successful personal and professional relationships. Emotional intelligence is our human superpower.

This April, I am leading a 3-part lab to explore emotional intelligence and leadership. Would you like to better understand yourself and what drives your behavior? Would you like to better understand others and ensure positive working relationships? If you answered yes, then this lab is for you!

In this three-part course we will explore the 4 key emotional intelligence competencies— self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness (or empathy) and relationship management (or influence). We will dig into each of these areas through reflection, discussion and interactive exercises as a way to cultivate your  emotional intelligence, thus impacting your professional relationships in profound ways.

In the lab, you will:

  • Learn the four main aspects of emotional intelligence and why they matter so much in the workplace

  • Practice emotional intelligence skills and behaviors through reflective exercises

  • Further develop leadership skills by increasing capacity in the most influential aspects of emotional intelligence

  • Gain insight into how to continually hone your emotional intelligence competencies in sustainable ways

If you’re interested in an introduction to emotional intelligence and its relevance for museum workplaces, check out the talk below, which I gave as part of the recent MuseumNext’s recent Health & Wellbeing Summit.  I was surprised and delighted by the response to the presentation and am happy to facilitate this lab in the MAP Community. This lab will give museum professionals a chance to apply and integrate these concepts into their work over the course of three weeks together.

How to participate

First, watch the recording below, which introduces emotional intelligence and why it’s important for museum professionals to prioritize EI.

Then, join me in the MAP Community — As a member, you’ll be the first to know about my upcoming livestream discussion on Tuesday, March 21st at 2pm ET. This free event will be open to all community members, and I’m looking forward to addressing some of the common questions I received from the MuseumNext summit with community members.

If you decide to join MAP’s Leadership Group, you’ll be able to participate in the lab. We already have a scheduling poll posted on the community website, which will help ensure we schedule the lab at a day and time that fits your schedule.

If you have questions about the lab, please reply to today’s letter or leave a comment on the blog post below.

Thanks for reading,
Jenn
