Wardley Mapping: Strategy for People Committed to Informal Learning

In this course, MaP Contributor Ben Mosior introduces Wardley Mapping as a way to uncover bias and cultivate facilitative leadership skills.

Course Overview

Who is Wardley Mapping for?

  • Anyone who makes (or aspires to make) decisions that must endure the test of time.

  • Anyone in a leadership position who wants to make better strategic decisions.

  • Everyday people who don’t want to be leaders but must be, out of necessity.

How is Wardley Mapping useful to cultural professionals?

A lot has changed in just a few years. The world is a different place — and not necessarily one that's supportive of cultural institutions. And yet, you understand the value of your work. You understand the lives it changes and why it remains important.

In circumstances like these, there are three options for cultural professionals and institutions:

  1. Wait it out in the hope that spring will eventually arrive.

  2. Adapt, changing your organization in response to the new demands of the environment.

  3. Intervene, changing the environment to create more favorable conditions for cultural institutions.

Wardley Mapping helps you describe your organization, the environment it's dealing with, and the changes that are underway, all so you can confront the difficult challenges of our time and uncover new ways to survive and thrive.

Course Outcomes and What to Expect

Course material includes 9 video units comprising 75 minutes of core material, plus supporting exercises, handouts, and resources.

Participants will leave the course with:

  • A clear understanding of what Wardley Mapping is, how it works, and why it's useful

  • A five-minute process for making Wardley Maps

  • A strategic thinking process for finding opportunities

  • Guidance for iterating and building on findings

  • Answers to common questions and obstacles

  • Instructions for building a daily practice

In addition to creating your map, you’ll see how other museum professionals use Wardley Mapping to tackle challenges of their own. Each course lesson now includes an embedded Miro canvas so you can see how other museum professionals are building their own Wardley Maps. Course participants are also invited to join us during MaP Academy live practice sessions. During live practice, experienced practitioners help newer members work through questions and challenges related to applying concepts in their work environments.

Content-wise this course was one of the easiest to translate into action that I've been to. I've already managed to successfully present the content to one coworker and am meeting with another this morning to explore how we might use the process departmentally.
