Beyond Planning: A Season of Strategy in MaP

Kyle Bowen

A plan tells you what you'll do with the resources you control. A strategy reveals what you won't do so you can shape what lies beyond your reach. This distinction matters because museums often confuse having a plan with having a strategy. Join us as we explore how strategy emerges from identifying real opportunities to support community goals, not from rationalizing existing programs and budgets. We'll preview perspectives that challenge conventional strategic planning while introducing key initiatives for the winter/spring season. What to Expectin this 25-minute gathering, we will: • 📽️ We’ll begin by examining a simple question: "What standard museum practice makes institutions replaceable?" Behind this question lies a core strategic challenge — when museums engage in universally adopted practices, they sacrifice opportunities to create unique value. Community perspectives on this question will spark our exploration of how strategy emerges not from planning exercises, but from choices about what makes an institution truly irreplaceable. • 🧭 Get a view of what’s ahead this season in MaP, including the Value Realization Collaborative with Dr. John Falk, strategy-focused Listening Circles, and more.  • 💬 Close with questions and discussion.  Who Should JoinCultural professionals who: • Question whether strategic planning generates genuine strategy • Question whether genuine strategy is any different than strategic planning • Are ready or want to make difficult strategic choices How to ParticipateRSVP using the link above to receive a reminder with instructions on how to join the session the day of the event.
