Every museum lives in the space between competing identities. University museums feel this tension most acutely – caught between academic missions and community relevance, between institutional authority and public accessibility. When you stand at this crossroads, which direction do you face? This Strategy Circle creates space to explore how museums can honor multiple identities simultaneously, turning strategic tensions into opportunities through fresh perspectives. Case Focus: Fred Jones Jr. Museum of ArtThe Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art sits at the physical and metaphorical edge of campus – a perfect embodiment of this strategic tension. In this inaugural Strategy Circle, we'll explore how FJJMA navigates the complex terrain between university expectations and community needs. Their challenge resonates across the sector: How can a museum honor its institutional roots while building bridges to broader communities? When expectations conflict, how do you make strategic choices that strengthen rather than dilute your impact? Session StructureThe 50-minute session follows a clear progression: 1. The MaP team presents the challenge briefly so that FJJMA staff can correct as needed and provide clarification (10 min) 2. Participants, including hosts @Kyle Bowen and @John H Falk, ask clarifying questions (5 min) 3. Participants and hosts discuss opportunities and approaches while FJJMA staff listen and jot down notes (15 min) 4. FJJMA joins the discussion and the group discusses application and barriers to implementation with the whole group (20 min) This isn't a panel discussion or theoretical workshop. It's a deliberately small circle where strategic wisdom emerges through focused conversation. The format balances intimacy for candid discussion with diverse perspectives that spark fresh insights, all within a structured framework that respects everyone's time and expertise. No preparation required — just bring your strategic mind and willingness to engage with a challenge that likely mirrors tensions in your own institution. Who Should ParticipateThis session is limited to 12 participants. If this challenge is one that you face at your museum, we encourage you to RSVP and join the discussion. If you're interested but unable to participate, leave a comment on this post ("add me"). Your comments help determine whether we'll host another Strategy Circle similar to this one.
