Validating Value in Museums: A conversation with John Falk

Kyle Bowen

The recording for this event is now available in the Progress Insights space. Many museums rely on traditional metrics like visitor numbers and simple satisfaction surveys because they assume (or hope) these measures adequately capture our institution's impact. Dr. John Falk's research challenges this assumption. In his forthcoming book Leaning into Value: Becoming a User-Focused Museum, Falk examines how museums can more effectively measure and communicate their impact. In this 50-minute session, we’ll focus on Chapter 7 of the book, ”Validating Value”. Participants will read the chapter in advance, and we’ll discuss how reframing our approach to measurement can reveal the long-lasting value of museum experiences — insights that could change how you demonstrate your museum's worth to stakeholders, funders, and your community. What to ExpectThe session will begin with an interview with Dr. Falk, exploring key concepts from the reading. The latter part of the session will be devoted to Q&A. As you read the chapter, jot down your questions and bring them to the session. Supporting and Museum Members: We’ll prioritize your questions during the session. If you read the chapter and have a question you’d like us to discuss, message Kyle before the session, and we’ll do our best to include it.
