Practicing Presence [VRC Listening Circle]

Kyle Bowen

Most of us think we're good listeners — or at least know how to perform good listening: Maintain eye contact, nod at appropriate moments, wait for our turn to speak. But deep listening — the kind that reveals hidden patterns in how people pursue their goals — requires us to drop these surface-level habits. They consume mental energy without helping us understand the other person. In this Listening Circle for Value Realization Collaborative participants and learning leaders, we'll get to know one another by listening as fellow participants share their experiences in trying to listen to others. (It's going to be very meta.) Whether you've attended previous circles, completed the first module of Listening Deeply, or are just beginning your journey, this session offers a supportive environment to build relationships while strengthening our listening practice. What to ExpectDuring the session, you'll: • Connect with fellow VRC participants through structured listening practice • Practice identifying interior cognition using our Miro board template • Build confidence through guided practice in a supportive environment • Choose your level of participation — share your own experiences or learn through observation The session follows the Chatham House Rule ("stories stay, lessons leave") to create a safe space for honest reflection. Why This Format WorksYou've probably experienced virtual networking sessions before — the awkward breakout rooms, forced icebreakers, and pressure to make quick connections with as many people as possible. These sessions take a fundamentally different approach. Instead of trying to meet everyone, you'll hear deeply from two or three colleagues as they share their experiences with specific challenges in museum work. Whether you choose to share your own story or learn through observation, you'll come away with genuine insights into how fellow professionals approach their work — the kind of understanding that fosters meaningful professional relationships. Who Should AttendThis session will give confirmed learning leaders from organizations enrolled in the VRC program a chance to apply deep listening techniques. If you work at a registered institution, but you are not a program learning leader (VRC Participants), you’re also welcome to attend.  Not in the Value Realization Collaborative? Register by January 31. Preparation• Learning Leaders: If possible, complete the first section of Listening Deeply before this session — but don't worry if you aren't able to get through all the lessons. • Collaborators: Review the Deep Listening Quick Guide (sent after RSVP).  • No prior listening experience needed to attend • Stable internet connection for virtual participation • We'll use Miro for collaborative practice (no account needed). Try Miro. About Your HostKyle Bowen will facilitate the session, drawing on his experience helping museums implement listening practices that strengthen both internal and external relationships.
