Starting Over After a Strategic Miss [MaP Listening Circle]

Kyle Bowen

We've all experienced the sting of a failed initiative. Yet these moments, though painful, can contain the seeds of our most powerful strategic insights. Join fellow MaP community members to explore moments when we've had to do a strategic reset or renewal. Our theme this season is Strategy, and strategic thinking requires the resilience to learn from failure and the courage to begin again. What to ExpectDuring the session, you'll: • Listen as community members share stories of strategic initiatives that didn't succeed and how they moved forward • Use our simple Miro board template to capture insights about resilience and learning • Practice identifying the transformative potential in apparent failures • Choose your level of participation — share your own experiences or simply observe and learn Follows the Chatham House Rule ("stories stay, lessons leave") to create a safe space for honest reflection. Why This Format WorksYou've probably experienced virtual networking sessions before — the awkward breakout rooms, forced icebreakers, and pressure to make quick connections with as many people as possible. These sessions take a fundamentally different approach. Instead of trying to meet everyone, you'll hear deeply from two or three colleagues as they share their experiences with specific challenges in museum work. Whether you choose to share your own story or learn through observation, you'll come away with a better view of how fellow professionals approach their work — the kind of understanding that fosters meaningful professional relationships. Who This Event Is ForThis session is open to all cultural professionals. If you're a Value Realization Collaborative or Listening Deeply course participant, this is another chance to practice what you're learning in your coursework. Preparation• Review the Deep Listening Quick Guide (sent after RSVP) • No prior experience needed (anyone can do this kind of listening!) • A stable internet connection for virtual participation • We’ll use a Miro board for collaborative practice, but you don’t need a Miro account to participate. Try Miro. About Your HostKyle Bowen will facilitate the session, drawing on his experience helping museums implement listening practices that strengthen both internal and external relationships.
